Vietnam police bust ring selling fake wild boar meat made from sows
The wild boar meat people in the south-central Vietnamese province of Binh Thuan have eaten in the last three months might have been fake products made from domestic sows.
Binh Thuan police had secretly watched over a ring that turned sow meat into wild boar meat for days thanks to tip-off from locals, before catching a man red-handed as he was transporting the bogus delicacy at first light on Friday.
Ly Minh Lanh was unloading the fake wild boar meat from his truck to the house of trader Nguyen Van Hien in the provincial capital city of Phan Thiet when officers came to catch him.
The driver was held for investigation, whereas the 114kg of pork on board the truck was seized.
Lanh, hailing from the southern province of Dong Nai, confessed to police he had the idea of making fake wild boar meat from domestic sow after seeing that the delicacy sells well and earns big profit.
Lanh bought the sows from his hometown of Dong Nai, slaughtered them at his house and used kitchen torch to turn their skins into yellow to look like wild boar meat, he told officers.
The fake wild meat was sold to Hien for VND40,000 (roughly US$2) a kg. The trader would then distribute the bogus products to the market at up to VND113,000 a kg.
Hien also admitted that he had colluded with Lanh in the making and selling of the fake wild boar meat to earn hefty profit for three months before police detection.
Police said they destroyed all of the seized fake wild boar meat.
