Hydro plant study kicks off in Vientiane province

PCC Electric Company will conduct a feasibility study into the construction of a 1MW hydroelectric power plant on the Por Riv er in Vangvieng district, Vientiane province.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the project was signed in the province last week between the company and the province's Department of Planning and Investment.

Company President Mr Khamphanh Vanlasy and department Director Mr Oudong Phongphaypadith jointly signed the MoU with the Deputy Governor of the province Ms Singkham Khongsavanh witnessing the ceremony.

An official from the department in charge of energy business, Mr Houngthong Khamlasy, said the company would begin the survey to collect technical, geological, environmental and social information, as well as studying water quantity, production capacity and related information.

The company will take about 18 months to complete the survey and report the results to the provincial authorities for assessing project feasibility.

At the signing ceremony, the company handed US$6,000 to the province as a project guarantee and granted US$1,500 each to the department, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment and the Department of Energy and Mines in Vangvieng district for capacity building.

Several small hydropower projects have been authorised for development in Vientiane province in recent years such as the Keng Luang, Nam Samoy and Nam Sana projects in Kasy district.

As of August 2014, hydropower plants in Vientiane province had a total installed capacity of about 302MW.
