Phu Quoc ecotourism resort to be shifted

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has allowed the shifting of an ecotourism resort, including a casino, to a new location in the southern Kien Giang Province's Phu Quoc Island.

Earlier, the casino was planned to be built in the Da Chong hamlet in Bai Thom Commune in the northeast of the island. It was designed to locate near a residential area and old tourism site on Phu Quoc Island, which would be converted into the Vinpearl Resort and the Giang Dien tourism site in Ganh Dau Commune, without the casino.

The Prime Minister's decision was made following a construction ministry proposal in April, in which the ecotourism resort's new location was said to be more appropriate for attracting investment. This proposal was supported by the planning and investment ministry.

The resort is also part of the Prime Minister's revision of the Phu Quoc Island's master planning project by 2030. Under the revised plan, the Prime Minister has decided to build a service centre for tourism and entertainment and golf court on 2,090ha in Cua Can Commune, and a sport and tourism service area on 142ha in the island's northern area.

The project will also include a complex seaport to be built in Dat Do Bay for logistics services and the upgrade of Duong Dong Port that will become Phu Quoc international passenger port. The Duong Dong urban area will be developed as the centre of Phu Quoc District, with a square and a statue of President Ho Chi Minh.

Phu Quoc Island is located off the western coast of Viet Nam in central Southeast Asia and on the Vietnam-Cambodia-Thailand marine economic belt.

The 589.23sq.km island has a population of more than 96,940 and 10 administrative units.

It is a special economic and administrative region, a national and international recreational resort and ecological tourism centre, an important transportation hub and a scientific and technological centre.

The island also plays an important role in national defence and security.
