Beach tourism prospects lost to abandoned projects

Coastal areas of Hue and Danang City have long been recognised as having high tourism potential, but real estate and resort projects have been abandoned for many years, wasting land and opportunities for investors wanting to become actively involved in growth of the areas.

An eco-tourism project in Lang Co Town, Hue, was given a permit and land plot in 2004, but more than a decade later, nothing has happened. The town has ten other projects, all of which are stagnant or have been abandoned.

The Vincostec-Hue Resort was given permits in 2008 and was expected to complete its development in 2011; only the foundations have been laid.

In early 2015, the provincial authorities of Thua Thien Hue revoked licenses for 15 projects at Chan May-Lang Co Economic Zone.

Danang City is also facing the same situation.

In 2005, Danang's beach was recognized as one of the most luxurious beaches in the world by Forbes magazine and My Khe Beach was included in a list of the top ten beaches in Asia.

But despite the potential tourism, many projects are abandoned and stagnant. Investors in a project in Nam Khang project signed a development deal in 2007, but all that has been built is a high wall around the land.

Tran Van Son, head of Danang's Office of Planning and Investment, said there are 50 projects on the coast, but 20 are stagnant. Authorities have repeatedly demanded investors start work, but nothing happened.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment and the Department of Planning and Investment will carry out an inspection of sites and may revoke license of stagnant projects. However, if projects stalled because investors are facing financial difficulties, the authorities will consider means to help speed completion.
