Hai Phong processes 15 million tonnes of cargo

The total volume of cargo handled by ports in the northern city of Hai Phong reached 15.48 million tonnes during the first three months of this year.

This indicated a year-on-year increase of 14.25 per cent, the municipal People's Committee reported.

The figure is also expected to cross the 23.8 per cent target laid out in the annual plan.

The Hai Phong Port Joint Stock Company led all the ports in the city by handling 5.33 million tonnes of cargo during the period.

The company's Director General, Nguyen Hung Viet, said the port would strive to improve service quality and streamline procedures to create conditions for customers. The port will also cooperate with the German Co-operation Development Agency (GIZ) to organise training courses on seaport management and logistics.

The company plans to collaborate with an enterprise to set up a joint stock company to exploit the two quays that receive 20,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT) vessels in the Dinh Vu economic zone. It also plans to implement a project to build six wharfs that will be able to receive freighters, with a capacity ranging between 8,000 and 100,000 DWT.

The company is targeting handling 20 million tonnes of cargo this year with a total turnover of VND1.5 trillion ($71 million).
