Businesses win recognition for management excellence

Nineteen Vietnamese businesses have been awarded the 2014 national gold quality awards in recognition of outstanding performances in the building and application of management systems.

In addition, 46 firms were presented with the silver awards.

The event was held in Ha Noi on Saturday by the Directorate for Standards, Metrology and Quality of Viet Nam in the presence of State Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, and representatives from ministries, sectors, and businesses nationwide.

Three Vietnamese businesses were presented with the Global Performance Excellence Award (GPEA) of the Asia-Pacific quality organisation. The Ha Noi-based Military Commercial Joint-Stock Bank (MB) won first prize in the large service-provider category.

The Sai Gon-Phu Quoc JSC from southern Kien Giang province bagged second prize in small and medium manufacturing, and Ha Bac Nitrogenous Fertiliser and Chemicals Co Ltd from northern Bac Giang Province came third in the category for big business producer.

Addressing the ceremony, Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan said a strong business community helped the country to develop industrialise and modernise.

She warned that the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community and the signing of many free trade agreements would pose numerous challenges for Vietnamese businesses.

Therefore, businesses must continuously improve the quality of products with the support of advanced science and technology to raise their position in both domestic and global playgrounds, she said.

Launched in 2009, the National Quality Awards are part of the International Asia-Pacific Quality Awards system.

Firms are judged on seven criteria - leadership, strategic planning, customer service, market focus, knowledge management, workforce focus and process management.

Ngo Quy Viet, director general of the Ministry of Science and Technology's Directorate for Standards, Metrology and Quality, said the prize winners performed excellently in maintaining and improving quality systems, and in contributing to provincial and national economy.
