That Luang Plaza construction works continue
The construction of the new That Luang Plaza trade and commercial centre complex in Vientiane is now 25 percent complete and is expected to be complete sometime in the next few years.
The ground breaking ceremony for the project was held at the end of 2010 with the attendance of Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad, former Vientiane Dr Sombath Yialiher, and other high-ranking officials.
Local news agencyies reported that two project contractors confirmed that the construction of the That Luang Plaza should be complete within two years time even though it is only 25 percent complete at this stage.
In recent months city authorities including Vientiane Vice Major Dr Anouphab Tounalom have visited the site and directed the relevant sectors to increase their attention to monitoring the progress of the project through ongoing meetings with the pr oject contractors.
According to the construction design, the plaza will comprise a seven storey building but the developers have proposed the possibility of adding additional floors, the Vientiane Planning and Investment Department reported.
Currently this is just talk but the Vientiane Public Works and Transport Department has been directed to survey the possibility of the additional floors and certify that it would be structurally sound.
Meanwhile construction work is continuing on the structure, Vientiane Times reporters observed yesterday.
The project is a joint investment of nearly US$60 million between a local construction company, Chitchareune Construction Co., Ltd and the An Phu-Lao Joint Venture Co. Ltd of Vietnam according to a local news agency.
It is i n the process of redevelo ping the old That Luang market at That Luang Tai village, Xaysettha district, into a modern commercial area.
The two companies have been authorised to develop the land for the construction of the trade centre, offices for rent, high-class a partments, and a modern parking area.
The project has been granted a 70 year land concession and it is hoped that it will provide more facilities for Vientiane residents.
The project has received loans from the Bank of Investment Development of Vietnam and the Lao-Viet Bank.
