In a bid to provide cheaper meat for the local market, Cambodia’s first modern slaughterhouse plans to officially launch in May, managing director of SLN Meat Supply Hor Sim Leang said yesterday.
Leang said that about 90 per cent of the slaughterhouse’s construction was finished.
“We are waiting for the arrival of the machines, connecting to the electrical grid, and some other small works which all will be finished in two months,” Leang said, adding that the slaughterhouse had signed agreements with wholesale distributors in eight major provinces.
The 30-hectare factory, located in Preah Sihanouk province’s Prek Toal village, is slated to slaughter 500 imported cattle per day.
Once the factory begins operating at full capacity, Leang said it would import 10,000 cattle from Australia every month to produce meat for the local market and neighbouring countries.
The wholesale price of the meat is planned to be between $9.80 and $15 per kilo.
Hak Lina, board member of the Cambodia Restaurant Association, said the slaughterhouse’s construction would help supply more reasonably priced meat.
