Businesses rush to find unskilled workers

Many businesses have begun their campaigns to recruit new workers for their expansion plans in 2015, when the national economy is expected to improve. However, the recruitment choices are limited.

Two job transaction floors in districts 6 and Binh Thanh organized by the HCM City Job Center on December 9-10 saw 59 businesses offering 1,810 jobs.

Observers noted that the employers most wanted workers in the textile and garment sector, business officers, security guards, unskilled workers and salespeople.

The candidates for these jobs need only a high school degree.

In some cases, employers said they did not set any requirements on work experience and degrees.

However, the observers said, though setting low requirements on candidates, the employers still found it difficult to find enough workers.

They noted that many people participated in the events, but they did not focus on looking for information about new jobs, but just paid attention to the procedures on workers’ unemployment status certification.

Hoang Thi Yen from Circle K Vietnam said the company wanted to recruit 150 new workers to prepare for the opening of new shops, including 50 part-time salespeople to work in the Tet sales season, and 100 sales interns.

However, it has not been easy to find suitable candidates, despite high unemployment figures.

The company has been trying to seek workers not only at job centers, but through job websites as well.

Truong Nhu Ngoc from Nielsen, a market survey firm, said the company is looking for 70 people to collect market information.

“Though the job is simple, we still find it difficult to find suitable candidates,” Ngoc said. “I have not found anyone today. It seems that few workers are interested in that kind of job.”

The director of a realty firm in HCM City said he plans to recruit many sale officers in anticipation of the real estate market warming up in 2015.

Tri Nghia, a personnel officer at the firm, said the company has been trying to approach workers anywhere they can, from job events to job websites like timviecnhanh, 24h and vietnamworks.

Giap Kim Linh, head of the human resource division of a Long An-based concrete company, said it was most difficult to employ sales staff, since people think this is hard work.

A job expert noted that the demand for salespeople is very high, while the supply is modest.

“This is really a challenging job,” he said. “This is not a good choice for workers who want a stable income. Also, sales staff incomes depend on their sales.”

FALMI, a job company, predicted that HCM City will need 265,000 additional workers in 2015.
