Fibre optic link between Laos and Thailand under study

Electricite Du Laos (EDL), in cooperation with the Sky Telecom Company and EGAT International Company, will study the potential of rolling out fibre optic cable to provide modern telecommunications links in Laos.

The memorandum of understanding for t he fibre optic connection study project was signed in Vientiane yesterday by EDL's Managing Director, Mr Sisavath Thiravong, Sky Telecom Company's Director General, Mr Khamkhith Saysongkham, and EGAT International Company's Acting President, Mr Thana Putarungsi.

The project will make use of EDL and EGAT's electric transmission line infrastructure to run fibre optic cables to the provincial capitals and upgrade the country's telecommunications infrastructure.

If feasible , it will also provide an additional source of income for the electricity generators as well as Sky Telecom and make the transmission lines more viable.

The MOU ceremony was attended by the Deputy Minister of Energy and Mines, Dr Khammany Inthirath, Deputy Minister of Post and Telecommunication, Mr Thansamay Kommasith and Deputy Minister of National Defense, Major General Souvone Leuangbounmy who is also Vice President of National Internet Management Commission along with officials of three sides.
