GE appoints new GM for $110 million Haiphong plant

US industrial conglomerate GE last week announced the appointment of Vu Thu Trang as its new general director for the group’s $110 million GE Haiphong manufacturing facility.

This appointment signifies a crucial milestone for GE in Vietnam, underscoring its commitment to grow and develop local talent in the country. Trang has the distinction of being the first woman to run the facility since it started operations in 2008.

In her new role, Trang will take responsibility for site safety, quality, and financial performance. With the support of her 600 employees, and by partnering with other supply chain teams, she will aim to deliver better products at lower cost and accelerate new product introductions to ensure growth and development of the site.

“This assignment brings me great pride,” Trang told VIR, “but at the same time, I am also aware of the substantial challenges ahead. With great support from GE’s staff and partners, we are able to jointly deliver high-standard products and contribute to GE’s success with the Haiphong plant, in Vietnam, and also worldwide”.

Trang joined GE in 2008, and since then she has held key roles in the growth of the Haiphong facility. Prior to her new position, she acted as senior programme manager, leading and coordinating new production introductions at the facility. She also served as programme manager on a GE site in China’s Hangzhou, where she delivered outstanding results on operational planning and process optimisation. Earlier, she was finance manager for the Haiphong plant.

Trang said that GE Haiphong had been recognised as one of the top three firms with the biggest export turnover in the northern port city for the last three years.

“My priority in this new position is to ensure the plant operates effectively and sustainably, and then to expand in line with GE’s increased investment plan in Vietnam,” she noted.

GE was one of the first US companies established in Vietnam in 1993, before the US embargo was lifted. Since 2008, GE has invested more than $110 million into its Haiphong facility, producing wind turbine generators and other energy products exported to GE manufacturing and service centres around the globe.
