Xekong's exports earn nearly US$10 million
Xekong province has earned around US$10 million from exported goods over the first six months of the 2013/2014 fiscal year which exceeded the plan by 3.3 percent, a senior provincial authority revealed.
The Deputy Governor of Xekong province Mr Lieng Khamphoun said at a recent meeting to review the economic implementation, that the provincial authorities and industry and commerce sector were key factors in promoting the transformation of raw produce into commercial goods.
“Many processing factories have been producing their goods under the guidelines of the law,” Mr Lieng said.
Domestic and foreign investors frequently endorse processing goods through the use of local raw materials to support economic development.
He said Xekong province had a large amount of raw materials to supply the demand of markets and the products could be processed to ensure their optimal value.
Over the previous six months of the current fiscal year, goods worth almost US$10 million were exported to neighbouring countries, exceeding original projections.
Imported products amounted to more than US$100,000 in the first six months of the fiscal year, which is equivalent to only 11.5 percent of the plan for the whole year.
Major exported products of the province are electricity and agricultural goods.
The industry and commerce sector expects exports, including electricity, agricultural produce and forestry, will increase to an estimated figure of US$29 million in the last six months of this fiscal year.
Xekong province is one of the smallest provinces in Laos but the abundance of natural resources is an essential key in boosting the socio economic development of the province.
