Viet Nam forum scores Berlin success
A Viet Nam investment forum that took place in Berlin on Thursday was a success as nearly 200 German companies participated in the event.
The event was a joint effort by the Berlin Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK), the Vietnamese Ministry of Planning and Investment, and the Vietnamese Embassy in Germany.
In his opening remark, visiting Minister of Planning and Investment Bui Quang Vinh hailed Germany as the largest European economy with a system of modern public governance and hi-tech innovations, which are crucial to Viet Nam's economic restructuring.
He assured the participants that promising chances await them once Viet Nam fully joins the ASEAN Free Trade Area and enters into a free trade agreement with the European Union and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) deal.
Viet Nam will further review its economic institutions, regulate the economy based on market tools and allocate a fair share of capital and resources, thereby creating conducive conditions for investors to do business in the country, he emphasised.
Citing successful joint projects, such as the Vietnamese-German University, Governing Mayor of Berlin Klaus Wowereit was optimistic about greater coordination between Berlin and Viet Nam's major cities of Ha Noi and HCM City, particularly in areas, such as transport infrastructure, water supply and treatment, and also research.
According to him, Germany has selected HCM City as the host for its Asia-Pacific economic cooperation forum, which highlights the fact that Viet Nam is on the radar screen of German investors.
At the forum, representatives from high-profile groups, such as Braun, Bosch, and Duane Morris shared their work experiences in Viet Nam. Several queries related to the country's investment climate were also answered.
Earlier, Minister Vinh participated in a discussion with Mayor Wowereit and IHK President Eric Schweitzer, who also takes charge of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in a bid to seek stronger bilateral ties.
While in Berlin, he also met with State Secretary to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy Stefan Kapferer, State Secretary to the Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development Thomas Sillberhorn, and Siemens executives.
In Frankfurt city, Vinh met Chairman of the German Asia-Pacific Business Association and Deutsche Bank Chief Executive Officer Jurgen Fitschen before holding talks with the executives of Western Berlin groups operating in Viet Nam.
