Lao bank sees rapid growth in depositors

The Joint Development Bank (JDB), a Vientiane-based private bank, recorded over 10,000 depositors this year, some eight to 10 percent above the plan, a bank director said.

Speaking at the launch of the Sikhay service unit on Wednesday, JDB Director Thongchaleun Khenmingmongkhon said the bank had significantly increased the number of depositors this year compared to the plan drawn up last year.

The bank received approval to operate as a 100 percent privately owned business in October last year and the board of directors have increased the registered capital to meet the legal requirements.

“Currently we are looking at our domestic services and plan to increase the number of service units across the country,” Mr Thongchaleun said.

“The bank is also working on improvements to several important areas involving new technology and the provision of information and customer services.”

“JDB is eyeing listing on the Lao Securities Exchange and is paying close attention to integration with the Asean Economic Community in 2015,” he added.

The bank plans to launch a further three service units to add to its current five in the provinces of Savannakhet, Borikhamxay, Champassak, Khammuan and Luang Prabang, bringing the total to eight, the director said.

“We expect to offer excellent service to our local clients with the rapid development of service products and the installation of ATMs, so we hope to see even more new customers coming to us next year,” Mr Thongchaleun said, adding that more than 40 ATMs are already available nationwide.
