US says Vietnam shrimp imports do not hurt its industry
A US industry is neither materially injured nor threatened with material injury by reason of imports of frozen shrimp from Vietnam and four other nations, the International Trade Commission (USITC) announced today.
Earlier, the Department of Commerce (DOC) has determined that shrimp imports from Vietnam, as well as China, Ecuador, India, and Malaysia are subsidized.
The USITC determination came after commissioners Daniel R. Pearson, Dean A. Pinkert, David S. Johanson, and Meredith M. Broadbent voted in the negative, while chairman Irving A. Williamson and commissioner Shara L. Aranoff voted in the affirmative, according to its press release.
As a result of the USITC's negative determinations, DOC will not issue countervailing duty orders on imports of these products from Vietnam China, Ecuador, India, and Malaysia.
In 2012 the US imported a total of US$1.9 billion worth of shrimps from the said countries. The total shrimp import turnovers in 2012 were $2.4 billion.
Thailand topped the list of its leading sources, while Vietnam stood at the fifth position.
