Vietcombank CEO appointed as State Bank Deputy Governor
The decision to appoint Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Thanh as the deputy governor of the State Bank of Vietnam was announced by the Government yesterday, July 22.
According to Decision 1205 signed by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Thanh assumed the new post from July 19. Thanh is currently the Board Member and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (Vietcombank).
Born in 1957 in the southern province of An Giang, Thanh has worked in the banking and financial sector for 31 years, starting as an employee at a branch of the State Bank in An Giang in 1982.
In 1988 he joined the Vietnam Agricultural and Rural Development Bank (Agribank) as the director of Agribank branch in An Giang.
He left Agribank to Vietcombank in 1991. In 2007 he was appointed as Vietcombank CEO, replacing Vu Viet Ngoan, who became Vice Chairman of the Economic Committee of the National Assembly and is currently the Chairman of the National Finance Supervision Committee.
The plan to add Thanh to the executive committee of the State Bank of Vietnam was prepared for several months. Thanh passed the vote of confidence before he was approved by the central government.
From January 1, Deputy Governor Tran Minh Tuan retired. With the participation of Mr. Thanh, the State Bank of Vietnam has six deputy governors, including three who were appointed after Governor Nguyen Van Binh took office in August 2011.
Vietcombank has also planned a staffing plan from the shareholders’ meeting in late April, but until now it has not announced the name of the new CEO. Chief of the Office of the State Bank of Vietnam Nghiem Xuan Thanh and three others have been added to the Board of Management of Vietcombank this term.
