Lao, Chinese companies ink hydropower agreement

The Huay Pa Lay and Huay Samong Mini Hydropower Company, a Laos-based private hydroelectric development company, signed a cooperation agreement with China's Hunan Linging Heng Yan Generating Equipment Company in Hong Kong last week.

Some 20 private companies from Hunan province and Hong Kong also signed cooperation agreements on the same occasion.

Present at the signing ceremony were the governors of Hunan province and Hong Kong along with other senior government officials.

Project Director from Huay Pa Lay and Huay Samong Mini Hydropower Company, Mr Sisouvanh Southiphong, was one of the parties signing an agreement with the President of Hunan Linging Heng Yan Generating Equipment Company, Mr Goa.

The agreement relates to the construction of the 1.6MW Huay Samong hydropower dam, a small scale project located in Sanamxay district, Attapeu province, with an annual generat ing capacity of 8,000 kWh.

Construction of the dam is scheduled for completion next March. The Huay Pa Lay hydropower dam is situated in Bachiengchaleunsouk district in Champassak province. This small scale dam is expected to produce 14,000 kWh of electricity per year, with construction set to begin later this year.

The two projects will cost about US$13 million. Hydroelectric development is viewed as essential in southern Laos to meet the rapidly growing demand for electricity.
