List reveals nation's leading shareholders
As the stock market closed on the last trading session of a difficult year, those who have best navigated the financial minefield were named on a list of 2012's top earners.
The total value of shares of the top 10 hit VND38.3 trillion (US$1.8 billion), while that of the next 10 richest men and women reached VND8.7 trillion ($414.2 million).
In 2011, the corresponding figures were VND35.7 trillion ($1.7 billion) and VND8.1 trillion ($385.7 billion).
All of the 10 leading shareholders earned more than VND1 trillion ($47.6 million) each last year.
Two among them saw their assets drop from 2011's figures – Ho Hung Anh, chairman of Techcombank and vice chairman of food processor Masan Group (MSN); and Nguyen Van Dat, chairman and general director of property developer Phat Dat (PDR).
Another real estate leader, Vingroup's (VIC) chairman Pham Nhat Vuong, still ranked first with around VND17.2 trillion ($819 million) although his assets fell compared to the previous fiscal year, as real estate stocks were affected by the industry downturn.
Meanwhile, Doan Nguyen Duc – known as chairman of property developer Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAG) and a famous football club investor – enjoyed the fastest growth in earnings, increasing from VND1.26 trillion ($60 million) to over VND5.6 trillion ($266.7 million). In addition, the deals to gain control in Sacombank (STB) promoted a few new names up the richest businessmen list on the stock market last year, mainly those related to Southern Bank.
Tram Trong Ngan, son of Sacombank's newly-appointed vice chairman Tram Be, became the 12th richest with VND955 billion ($45.4 million). Tram Be and his children currently hold nearly 20 per cent in Southern Bank and 6.7 per cent in Sacombank.
Ranking 46th, Sacombank's new general director Phan Huy Khang is holds 14 million STB shares worth VND278 billion ($13.2 million). Prior to his post at the bank, Khang spent 12 years working for Southern Bank.
