VN’s tra fish put on "green list" of healthy seafood

Sweden and Denmark have recognised Vietnamese tra fish (also known as pangasius) as being raised in a sustainable development environment in accordance with international standards.

The Vietnam Ministry of Trade and Industry cited information posted on Sweden's website www.wwf.se and Denmark's website www.wwf.dk that have revised their Fish Guides, to include Vietnamese tra fish on the "green list" of healthy seafood.

The guides have been created to advise people which seafood to enjoy and which seafood to avoid.

It was based on a methodology to assess the sustainability of seafood species developed by the WWF, together with the Seafood Choices Alliance, North Sea Foundation and the Marine Conservation Society.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), the Vietnamese tra fish sector reached its target this year, with 10 percent of products being certified by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC). The ASC's mission is to transform aquaculture towards environmental sustainability and social responsibility, using efficient market mechanisms that create value across the chain.

The Vietnamese tra fish sector is expected to have all products receive certifications of responsibility for aquaculture by 2015, 50 percent of which will come from the ASC.
