HCM City's annual CPI up by 4%

The CPI (consumer price index) for HCM City rose by 0.17 per cent in December from the previous month, bringing the total increase in the CPI for the year to 4.07 per cent, according to the city's Statistics Office.

In December, the price of garments, hats and footwear rose by 0.96 per cent; household equipment and utensils by 0.45 per cent; cultural, entertainment and tourism services by 0.29 per cent and food and foodstuffs by 0.25 per cent.

Medicine and health services rose by 0.18 per cent; education services by 0.14 per cent; and housing, electricity, water and fuel by 0.07 per cent compared with the previous month.

The price of postal and telecommunication products and services remained stable, while the prices of transport services fell by 0.75 per cent compared with November.

Gold prices went up by 0.94 per cent while the prices of the US dollar dropped by 0.07 per cent compared with November.

The price of food went up by 0.20 per cent in December. Rice prices rose slightly beginning in August due to a sharp jump in rice exports in the past few months.

However, the ample rice reserve for domestic consumption has helped stabilise prices in local markets, according to the HCM City Statistics Office.

But the price of rice expors in December were slighty lower than in early 2012 because the world's major rice growers such as Viet Nam, Thailand and the US hae had bumper crops this year.

India resumed rice exports in late 2011, while Cambodia and Myanmar resume rice exports this year.

In addition, exporters with large volumes of rice inventory have accepted lower prices. Under these conditions, retail rice prices could be a slightly lower in early 2013.

Meanwhile, the price of foodstuff increased slightly by 0.24 per cent in December. This included a 2.93 per cent increase in vegetable prices; a 2.84 per cent rise for poultry meat; a 1.54 per cent increase for eggs; a 0.51 per cent increase for pork; and a 0.53 per cent rise in seafood prices.

In December, foodstuff prices rose by 1.01 per cent compared with early 2012. Prices for foodstuff remained fairly stable in 2012, especially compared to the years before 2009.

This was due to the city's price stabilisation programme, according to the city's Statistics Office.

The capital city's consumer price index (CPI) increased slightly by 0.26 per cent in December, up 6.29 per cent compared to the same period last year.

The figures were released by the municipal Statistics Department on December 21.

The capital city's consumer price index (CPI) increased slightly by 0.26 per cent in December, up 6.29 per cent compared to the same period last year, according to figures released by the municipal Statistics Department yesterday.

The city's 2012 CPI represents a year-on-year rise of 8.57 per cent, mostly due to the sharply elevated prices of education and healthcare services. Excluding the 0.56 per cent ebb in post, telecommunications and transport service prices, most commodity groups experienced a rise on the previous month. Prices of footwear and garments recorded the highest increase (1.6 per cent), followed by home appliances, tourism services, and construction materials.

CPI declined in only three months during 2012, with 0.03 per cent in April, 0.17 per cent in June, and 0.29 per cent in July. September CPI hit a record high of 2.47 per cent thanks to a price surge in education services. — VNS

Cong Xuan Mui, Director of the municipal Statistics Department, said Ha Noi was facing a fuel and material input price hike as inflation and interest rates continued to rise.

Although business operations have encountered numerous challenges caused by global market fluctuations, Ha Noi successfully maintained its growth rate in accordance with the annual target, he added
