The young big tycoons who follow their fathers’ footsteps
Vietnam now witnesses the rise of a new generation of businessmen – the young 7X and 8X ones (who were born in 1970s and 1980s), who, backed by the powerful families, are managing the enterprises capitalized at trillions of dong.
On September 18, 2012, the Board of Directors of the Asia Commercial Bank (ACB) approved the resignation of Tran Xuan Gia, 73, from the post of Chair of ACB.Gia had been a very famous portrait in the business circle in Vietnam until the day the police announced the decision to prosecute him on September 27 for entrusting ACB employees to use ACB’s capital to deposit at credit institutions, causing serious consequences.
The person who has taken over the office is Tran Hung Huy, 34, the father of the former President of ACB Tran Mong Hung.
The 2010 prospectus of ACB showed that Tran Huy Hung, though being young, has doctorate of economics and has been working at the bank for a long time, holding different posts.
Hung joined ACB in 2002, when he was 24 years old. From 2004 to 2008, Huy worked as the marketing director, and then became a member of the Board of Directors in 2006. He became Deputy General Director of ACB in 2008.
Huy is now also a Member of the Board of Directors of ACB Securities Company.
Nguyen Thanh Toai, Deputy General Director of ACB, who is the spokesman of the bank, when talking about the newly appointed President, said Huy is young, but he is really a hereditary banker, the son of the founder of the bank, a member of the family which owns the highest proportion of the bank’s stakes.
Especially, Huy has a lot of advantages when taking the office as the new President of the bank: he has been working for the bank for the last many years. He has deep knowledge in his field with master and doctorate obtained from the US universities.
Dang Hong Anh, President of the Saigon Thuong Tin Real Estate Company (SCR) is also a young hereditary banker. Anh, born in 1980, is the son of Dang Van Thanh, President of Sacombank.
Anh not only has a famous father, but a well-known mother as well, who is the Chair of a series of businesses, namely Thanh Thanh Cong, Bien Hoa Sugar, Deputy Chair of SCR. Anh is not only the President of SCR, but also the Member of the Board of Directors at Sacombank.
At the age of 18, Anh started his business by running a shop which had the initial investment capital of five million dong only. Three years later, he teamed up with three friends to trade steel products and reaped great successes.
Anh joined SCR at the age of 24, and now, at the age of 27, he is a successful businessman.
Under his management, in the second quarter of 2012, SCR earned 288 billion dong worth of turnover, or 2.4 times higher than the same period of the last year.
Anh’s younger sister Dang Huynh Uc My, born in 1981, has also become famous like her parents and brother. The young businesswoman has been put on different important posts after she obtained the bachelor degree in business administration in New Zealand.
From 2009 to April 2012, My worked as the General Director of Thanh Thanh Cong Company, before she became Chair of Bourbon Tay Ninh Company (SBT). SBT is now one of the top 30 blue chip shares on the HCM City bourse.
Besides Anh and My, the Vietnamese business circle has some other groups of whole brothers who at the same time manage big businesses.
Tram Khai Hoa and his brothers of Tram Be family, a powerful businessman, are another example. Hoa is believed to be the youngest businessman among the most powerful entrepreneurs at this moment.
Hoa, born in 1988, is now believed to be the youngest stock millionaire.
