Hydropower plant slated for Xaysomboun

A local hydropower developer, under the Deng Sanakeo (DSK) Group, expects to complete the construction of Nam Pha Gnai hydropower plant in Xaysomboun district, Vientiane province by the end of 2014.

The developer signed a operation agreement with the Vientiane provincial planning and investment department last Thursday, and the company will have ownership of the project for 50 years, with an option to extend for another 15 years.

“Currently we have already cleared lands at the project site, prepared the construction material and built dormitories for the staff,” Mr Sayasith Sanakeo, a Nam Pha Gnai Hydropower Co Ltd representative, said yesterday.

Construction work will begin when the rainy season ends, he said. “The company will invest 344 billion kip (US$43 million) to develop the project.”

Once it is completed, the project will have an installed capacity of 15 megawatts that will be able to generate 126 Gwh of energy per year. It will have a reservoir 150 hectares in .

“We will sell the generated energy to Electricite du Laos (EDL) to supply, once we have a commercial operation date,” Mr Sayasith said.

However the investor has not signed a power purchase agreement with EDL but “we will have an agreement on that soon,” Mr Sayasith said.

DSK is a large business group in Laos that has been involved in hotels and spas, pre-stressed concrete factories, pure drinking water and fruit juice production, open market operations and electricity transmission line installation.
