Pepper exports surge 31pc in six months

Vietnam exported 73,000 tonnes of pepper in the first six months of this year, earning $494 million, a year-on-year increase of 4.3 per cent in volume and 31.7 per cent in value, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

In June alone, 13,000 tonnes of pepper were exported with a total value of $89 million.

Despite the decline in export volume to two big markets, the US and Germany, the export price to other major markets continues to rise.

The International Pepper Community forecasts that Vietnam will export around 125,000 tonnes of pepper by the end of this year. The country continues to rank as the largest pepper exporter in the world, accounting for approximately 50 per cent of the global market.
