Swiss, Japanese companies enter Lao pharmacy market

Two foreign companies, Switzerland's DKSH Business Unit Healthcare and Japan's Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical, have signed a business cooperation agreement in relation to the sales and distribution of pharmaceutical products in Laos.

DKSH recently signed the agreement to provide commercial distribution services to Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical in Laos, a Japanese company specialising in external analgesics.

Under the agreement DKSH will provide marketing, sales, registration and distribution services for Hisamitsu's Salonpas brand, which was officially launched in Laos early this month.

“DKSH is our market expansion partner of choice in Asia. It has a regional service platform, dedication to quality and expertise in launching and marketing over-the-counter (OTC) products in various markets in Asia.”

“We have decided to expand our partnership to Laos. By entering this market, we will further strengthen our position in Indochina and look forward to growing our business,” said Katsuhiro Sato, General Manager of Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical's Sales Division.

“Currently, there are only a limited number of Japanese healthcare brands available in Laos. With the trust that Lao people have in the quality of Japanese brands, we look forward to supporting Hisamitsu to establish its brand in the marketplace,” Kentaro Imamoto, General Manager of DKSH Laos' Business Unit Healthcare, said.

The agreement between the two companies underlines DKSH's position as a partner of choice for Asian pharmaceutical companies wanting to grow their presence in Asia, a direct result of the growing inter-Asian trade.

It also highlights the company's expertise in launching new products in competitive market environments.

Laos is a fast-growing country that will be a strategic investment for Asian and international companies in the years ahead.

Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical and DKSH are long-term partners that started to collaborate in Hong Kong in 2006 and have since continuously expanded the partnership to Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan.

Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical was established in 1847 in Japan and is currently one of the leading pharmaceutical companies manufacturing and dealing with external analgesic and anti-inflammatory preparations, such as medicated plasters, gels and sprays.
