Trade mission boosts Laos-Korea investment

A Korean trade meeting, held yesterday in Vientiane, has further sparked interest in trade and investment between Laos and the Republic of Korea.

KOTRA (Korean Business Centre, Embassy of the Republic of Korea) hosted the Goyang Paju, Yangju Trade Mission, with the aim of revealing new Korean products.

This was the fourth Trade Mission in 2014, with six Korean companies engaging in one-on-one business meetings with Lao companies to discuss the trade and investment opportunities offered by the two countries.

The meetings enable Lao and Korean companies to discuss the potential and feasibility of trade.

The latest range of Korean products includes cosmetics, food, beauty appliances, interior décor products such as wallpaper and stickers for furniture, CTTV cameras, and LED advertising lights.

Meetings are held every few months, said KOTRA Assistant Manager, Ms Souphaphone Keovanna.

The get-togethers have spurred more Korean companies to consider trading with and investing in Laos each year, she said. As Laos will become part of the Asean Economic Community next year and there will be direct flights between Laos and Korea, she believed the number of Korean investors would increase in the coming years.

Although Korean products tend to be a bit more expensive than goods produced in China and Vietnam, they are of good quality, Ms Souphaphone added.
