Laos, Korea team up to boost electrical safety

The Republic of Korea will seek to expand business cooperation in the field of electrical safety, with representatives from the Korea-Laos Friendship Association and the Korea Electrical Safety Corporation Company (KESCO) visiting Laos from November 24 and 27.

President of the Korea-Laos Friendship Association, Mr Oh Myung Hwan, KESCO President, Mr Lee Sang Kwon, and their party on Tuesday met with Minister of Energy and Mines, Mr Soulivong Daravong, to discuss the issue of safety when using electrical equipment.

KESCO is a public company that provides advice on how to avoid accidents resulting from the mishandling of electrical equipment. It engages in legal inspections, checks, research, technology development, and publicity activities to prevent such accidents.

During Tuesday's meeting, KESCO asked Laos to send electricians for training in Korea, saying it would further cooperation between the two countries.

The training sessions would also help to strengthen the friendly relations between the Lao and Korean governments.

On the same occasion, Mr Soulivong voiced his appreciation to the Korean party for their assistance. On behalf of the Lao government, he expressed his gratitude for Korea's willingness to continue to build cooperation.

Some hydropower projects in Laos are already generating electricity for both domestic supply and export, while other projects are under construction or underg oing feasibility studies.

The projects are vital for the development process because they are a major revenue earner for Laos.

South Korea is currently Laos' fourth largest foreign investor behind Vietnam, Thailand and China.

The Republic of Korea has been one of the most significant aid providers to Laos, making an important contribution to socio-economic development.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1995, both countries have maintained friendly relations and cooperation.

Korean investors have been quite active in Laos notably in the areas of education, health and rural development.

Korean investment in Laos covers a wide range of areas such as banking, agriculture, automobiles and electronics.

Korean electronic appliances are doing a brisk trade in Laos, such as Samsung and LG mobiles, as well as washing machines and refrigerators.
