Toyota recalls faulty airbags
Toyota (Cambodia) has issued a recall for almost 2,000 vehicles due to quality and security concerns over some autos’ airbags.
Toyota Hilux Vigo models produced between 2005 and 2010 have been called in by the company to have security checks on a “spiral cable” in the airbag, a statement released yesterday said.
Company executives could not be reached for comment yesterday, however one Toyota staff member who asked not to be named said that there are 1,987 Hilux Vigos being driven in Cambodia that require the airbag security check.
The staff member added that more than 300 cars had are already been checked.
“It is not a serious issue to be worried about,” he said, adding that the order to recall came from Toyota’s Japan headquarters.
“It just needs to be checked and the spiral cable in the airbag changed to ensure security and to prevent something bad from happening in the future. We want to be 100 per cent sure.”
Toyota is one of a number of global car makers that for the past two years have been recalling vehicles for faulty airbags in the US, according to Bloomberg.
On December 4, Bloomberg reported that Toyota widened its recall of vehicles suspected of having defective airbags to include Japan and China.
The announcement to recall vehicles for a safety check is not a negative reflection of the car brand or the automotive industry, but instead proves manufacturer responsibility and positive development in the industry, Pily Wong, vice-president of Cambodia Automotive Industry Federation, said.
“Because we are responsible for their product, we want customers to have a product that is 100 per cent safe, reliable, and good quality,” Wong said.
“It shows that they are very responsible for the product.”
Wong added that the recall is evidence of consumer benefits of purchasing new vehicles from authorised dealers instead of from unauthorised dealers who cannot provide similar guarantees for parts and faults.
Seng Voeung, Ford division manager for RMA Cambodia, said that it is normal for car brands to have such a recall
“It is not a bad image, it is just a good action,” Voeung said. “When a company finds something suspicious and they recall vehicles for a check, it shows that they have high responsibility to ensure quality for customers.”
