Dao coffee shops expand to Thailand

Dao-Heuang Group, a leading coffee producer in Laos, plans to expand its coffee shop outlets by ten new branches in Thailand over the next five years, with the company expecting net sales of 49.8 billion kip (200 million Thai baht).

This move is part of the company's plan to boost production capacity and also open retail outlets in neighbouring countries to take advantage of the new opportunities presented by the coming Asean Economic Community (AEC) in 2015.

Smart SME TV channel quoted Sum By Dee Co., Ltd General Manager Ms Yuwadee Voravath, as saying the situation in Thailand was more competitive than before, but the company had doubled growth after entering into the Thai market last April, with the screening of spot advertising especially well received by consumer groups.

Sum By Dee Co., Ltd signed a joint venture with Dao-Heuang Group to import Dao coffee from Laos and has also opened an outlet in Thanya Shopping Plaza on Srinakarin Road in Bangkok.

Ms Yuwadee said the company has recently opened a Dao Coffee shop in Siam Square One, which was its first coffee shop in Thailand and its fifth overall after the company had already opened a shop in Pakxe district, Champassak province, one in Vientiane, one in Luang Prabang province and another shop in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.

The new shop can accommodate about 50 customers, with an investment of around 5 billion kip (20 million Thai baht).

In addition, the company plans to open 10 more coffee shops in Thailand, including five more in Bangkok and other shops in busy tourism places and will focus on appropriate locations and appearances for the shops, she added.

Ms Yuwadee said the company also plans to import organic green tea products from the Dao coffee factory in Champassak province and expects to introduce it into the Thai market in the second quarter of next year.

This year, the company expects to earn an income of around 200 million baht from selling the products of Dao-Heuang Group.

Dao-Heuang Group, considered to be one of the largest and most progressive companies in Laos, has a hand in retail, real estate, consumer products and hotel industries. The group, established in 1991 by Dr Hao Litdan and his wife Leuang, has also set up joint ventures and distributorships in other countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, China, Cambodia, and Japan.

The company exports coffee to Japan, the United States, Europe, China, Vietnam, Myanmar and Cambodia.
