Developers eye Nam Mone hydropower capacity

Development of a hydropower plant on the Nam Mone River in Vangvieng district, Vientiane province will be possible according to a hydropower development company.

Managing Director of Nam Mone Hydropower Company Mr Phomkham Namkham made the comment when reporting the result of a feasibility study on the project his company has worked on over the past 15 months to the provincial Department of Energy and Mining last week.

“The study results showed the feasibility for developing a small electric power dam of 6 megawatt capacity on the river,” Mr Phomkham told the local media after reporting the study results to the department.

He explained that the future hydropower project would have three generators with 2 megawatts capacity each to be installed for the plant, while the reservoir which will be located 2 km from it will cover an area smaller than 1 hectare some 300 metres from the generators.

Mr Phomkham also spoke about environment and social matters concerning the project, saying the dam will not have any impact on the local communities especially the closest Namone village which is located 5 kilometres from the project

He said that the project was designed for effective release of sediment which will facilitate fish farming with community participation.
