Viet Nam and US promote trade, leading up to 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations

Viet Nam and the US agreed to further strengthen financial-monetary cooperation, economy, trade and investment ties to promote the bilateral relations between the two countries, leading up to the 25th anniversary of the establishment of Viet Nam-US diplomatic relations in 2020.

The agreement was made during a telephone conversation between Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue and US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Monday.

During the phone call, Hue affirmed that Viet Nam always attached great importance to the comprehensive US-Viet Nam partnership and expressed his appreciation at the increasing bilateral relations of the two sides, especially economic and trade cooperation. Two-way export turnover reached over US$60 billion in 2018, of which US exports hit over $12 billion, an increase of over 36 per cent compared to 2017, making Viet Nam one of the fastest growing export markets of the US.

Mnuchin appreciated the progress in economic and trade relations and investment between the two sides as well as the Vietnamese Government's interest in facilitating and handling problems that the US was concerned about.

Mnuchin also welcomed the recent signing of several economic cooperation agreements worth over $21 billion on President Donald Trump's visit to Viet Nam on the sidelines of the US-Korea summit in February this year. He said he was looking forward to boost the two sides’ economic-trade and investment cooperation in the future.

He also highly appreciated that Viet Nam had provided the US with information relevant to policies in the field of finance and currency, suggesting that Viet Nam would continue to talk with the US about this issue.
