Wind power projects await approval

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has repeatedly asked other ministries and agencies to gather their feedback on proposals by some local governments and investors to add their wind power projects to the revised national master plan for power development.

The industry ministry has sent numerous statements to the relevant ministries such as planning-investment, finance, natural resources-environment and defense over wind power projects, according to a report by Thanh Nien newspaper.

The most notable is that the People’s Committee of Bac Lieu Province in southern Vietnam has proposed the industry ministry list a wind power plant complex at a designed capacity of 608 MW into the national master plan.

The provincial government has also urged the ministry to consider three other plants whose combined capacity reaches 246.4 MW to be added to the plan.

Some days earlier, the People’s Committee of Soc Trang petitioned the industry ministry to approve the province’s wind power master plan at a revised capacity of 100.8 MW.

The industry ministry has so far received three proposals for wind power plants at a total capacity of over 1,000 MW to be added to the national master plan. The figure has already exceeded the plan’s target of 800 MW of wind power by 2020.

As Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc issued a decision on supporting mechanisms for the development of wind power projects in September 2018, the industry ministry has got a host of such projects pending approval.

The decision sets the feed-in tariff for onshore wind power at 8.5 U.S. cents per kWh, up from 7.8 U.S. cents per kWh from 2011, and offshore wind power at 9.8 U.S. cents per kWh.
