HCMC's purchasing power rises during Tet

Purchases recorded during the Tet holiday at supermarkets and traditional markets in HCMC rose in value by 12%-15% versus those recorded during last year's holiday. Local residents mainly bought essential items for Tet, such as meat, processed foods, confectionery and jams, according to the municipal Department of Industry and Trade.

From the 23rd to the 30th of the final lunar month, consumption at local supermarkets in the city increased strongly over regular days. In particular, the number of consumers flocking to supermarkets rose threefold between the 28th and the 30th versus other days, with revenues up some 20% year-on-year, VietnamPlus reported.

Meanwhile, consumption surged by 30%-50% from the 28th to the 30th of the given month in traditional markets as many of the locals went shopping for Tet on these days. In addition, the prices of some popular items for Tet such as chicken, cucumbers and bitter melons, as well as some fruits, edged up slightly.

Nguyen Huynh Trang, deputy director of the municipal department of trade, stated that the city had provided enough goods at reasonable prices for local residents to enjoy Tet, while its price stabilization program was executed effectively during the holiday. Apart from that, it had launched many promotional programs to boost the buying power of locals.

As the holiday comes to an end, most of the traditional markets in the city have resumed operations, mainly selling fresh foods, vegetables and fruits, while some supermarket chains, including Co.opmart and Satramart, have reopened for service since the second day of the lunar year. The prices of products reportedly remain reasonable.

The number of customers visiting supermarkets is expected to soar this weekend as people from multiple provinces return to the city for work and study. Accordingly, supermarket chain operators, such as Big C, are preparing to serve the demand by stocking up on a wide variety of goods.
