Nghi Son Economic Zone to be widened tenfold

The Ministry of Construction today, January 9, coordinated with the government of the north-central province of Thanh Hoa to hold a ceremony to announce a plan to expand Nghi Son Economic Zone in the province by nearly 10 times its current area to 106,000 hectares, news site Vietnamplus reported.

According to the expansion plan for the economic zone by 2035 with a vision toward 2050, the zone will cover nearly 66,500 hectares of land and 39,500 hectares of water surface.

It will encompass Tinh Gia District; the Yen My, Cong Binh and Cong Chinh communes of Nong Cong District; and the Thanh Tan, Thanh Ky and Yen Lac communes of Nhu Thanh District.

After being expanded, Nghi Son will be developed into a multisector marine economic zone, focusing on heavy and basic industries while constructing and effectively exploiting Nghi Son Port.

It will be a modern industrial, service and tourism complex, with Nghi Son industrial city at its center and Hai Ninh, Yen My and Thanh Tan as sustainable and smart urban areas.

In addition, the zone will operate under special mechanisms and is expected to become a driving force for the socioeconomic development of the province and the north-central region as a whole.

Nghi Son Economic Zone has served as an important gateway to connect northern Laos, northeastern Thailand and Thanh Hoa’s neighboring provinces with national and international shipping routes by roads and Nghi Son Port.

Speaking at the ceremony, Thanh Hoa Chairman Nguyen Dinh Xung said the expansion was crucial for the development of Nghi Son Economic Zone and the province in general, thus exploiting its potential and attracting investment.

In the coming period, the provincial authorities will complete the planning for the functional areas in the economic zone, continue improving the business environment in the province, promote investment and call for resources to develop infrastructure in the zone.

At the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Construction Phan Thi My Linh noted that the expansion of Nghi Son Economic Zone would make room for supporting industries; hi-tech, light industries; and agro-forestry-fishery product processing projects. In addition, the province’s tourism potential will be tapped, while its demand for urban development will be met.

Linh asked the province to quickly execute the expansion plan in line with the law and draw up plans for functional areas in the zone.
