Vietnam’s e-retailers eye 2 million orders on 5th Online Friday

An agency under the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade has introduced the fifth edition of an online sales program scheduled for December 7, during which products from renowned brands like Samsung, Oppo, LG, Jetstar, Vinamilk, Mattana, Canifa, and Uma will be offered at extreme discounts.

The first Friday of December has been designated as “Online Friday” by the Vietnam E-commerce and Digital Economy Agency since 2014, a homage to “Black Friday” – the busiest shopping event of the year in the U.S.

The sale will be held on the websites onlinefriday.vn and ngaymuasamtructuyen.vn.

Dang Hoang Hai, general director of the Vietnam E-commerce and Digital Economy Agency, under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, announced on Wednesday that famous e-commerce websites including Lazada, Shopee, Tiki, Lotte, and Adayroi will also take part in the program.

The organizing board is forecasting nearly two million orders valued at VND1.5 trillion (US$64.5 million) to be placed during the event. Participating enterprises raked in more than VND1 trillion ($43 million) in revenue from the 2016 event, and VND1.22 trillion ($52.46 million) last year.

According to Hai, 3,000 enterprises have so far registered to offer 5,000 products and services at substantial discounts.

The general director emphad that products must include certificates of origin with easily traceable provenance.

Hai also stressed that the quality of the goods will be strictly controlled by using e-commerce platforms as intermediaries.

Consumers are encouraged to perform payment using QR codes or card swipes at point-of-sale (POS) machines, instead of cash, he noted.

Customers will also receive discounts on goods they purchase as part of a cashback program with participation by as many as 20 banks during the event.

In addition, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Hanoi administration will jointly hold a one-week event at the pedestrian zones around Hoan Kiem Lake beginning on November 30, where consumers will have the chance to experience digital technologies and e-commerce.

With experience from previous editions of Online Friday, the agency’s Center for Information and Digital Technology will work to ensure the stability and accessibility of its technical system to five million users and 15,000 interactions at the same time.

This year is the first time the government is partaking in the organization of Online Friday.
