Successful WEF on ASEAN concludes

As the World Economic Forum on ASEAN 2018 (WEF ASEAN 2018) came to a close, Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh urged businesses and citizens to use their entrepreneurial spirit to contribute to national development in the digital era.

He reaffirmed the Vietnamese Government is resolved to be constructive and focus on growth.

The deputy PM called WEF ASEAN 2018 a success, with participants forming many potential solutions to the region’s challenges. It was clear that they should equip citizens with the skills needed to succeed in the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0), which will bring unprecedented opportunities and challenges.

Viet Nam and fellow ASEAN countries are to enhance co-operation and promote self reliance while working with partners from outside the region.

The deputy PM asked WEF to support Viet Nam and ASEAN as a whole as they attempt to realise the ideas discussed at the forum. Together, he said they can work toward a peaceful, stable and prosperous Southeast Asia.

International delegations expressed high hopes for the region’s growth. They were confident that by working together ASEAN countries can overcome regional issues.

Global managing partner of McKinsey & Co. Kevin Sneader said ASEAN countries are among some of the most attractive destinations for international investors.

Moving forward, the region must train its labour force to improve productivity. ASEAN countries will continue using trade agreements to strengthen their connection to the rest of the world.

Anne-Birgitte Albrectsen, CEO of Plan International, said WEF ASEAN 2018 offered an opportunity for international organisations to openly discuss shared issues, especially the challenges of the Industry 4.0 and the goal of lifting everyone out of poverty.

She said Viet Nam and other ASEAN countries have invested in education, laying a strong foundation for the region’s economic and social development. This model will serve as an example for other regions, and could help promote gender equality and unlock the full potential of women.

Viet Nam’s acting Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung said Industry 4.0 will require a different way of thinking. As technology evolves to make life easier, we must find new ways to adapt and master technology instead of just being consumers.

WEF ASEAN 2018, titled "ASEAN 4.0: Entrepreneurship and the Fourth Industrial Revolution," concluded on Thursday in Ha Noi. Nearly 1,000 delegates from ASEAN countries and some of the world’s leading businesses gathered to discuss a wide array of issues relevant to Southeast Asia.
