Airbus backs Viet Nam’s space industry development

Airbus will work with Viet Nam to develop the country’s space sector following a recent letter of intent inked between the company and the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Potential areas of bilateral collaboration included the exchange of information on issues related to Earth observation, organising and participating in scientific and technological events, and research into satellite technology, Airbus said in a statement.

“Airbus and Viet Nam are already partners via the VNREDSat-1 satellite. This agreement will allow us to continue working together on topics related to Earth observation and satellite technology, helping to strengthen our close relationship,” said Nicolas Chamussy, head of Airbus Space Systems.

In 2010, Airbus won a contract to develop, manufacture and launch Viet Nam’s first Earth observation satellite. The VNREDSat-1 was successfully launched in May 2013, enabling the country to better monitor and study the effects of climate change, predict and take measures to prevent natural disasters, and optimise the management of its natural resources.

The European manufacturer is also developing its industrial presence in the country, where several local firms supply aerostructures and components across the Airbus civil aircraft product line. This helps generate full-time employment for 550 highly skilled Vietnamese workers.

In education, the company is supporting the development of two new degree programmes at the University of Science and Technology of Ha Noi, helping Vietnam meet its growing requirements for aerospace engineers and professionals.
