Gov’t pledges to protect investors’ legitimate interests

PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc reaffirmed the Government attaches importance to improving business environment and protecting the interests of investors on the basis of Vietnamese laws during his tour to Formosa Ha Tinh Steel Corporation (FHS) on Friday.

The Government chief said the environmental breakdown caused by the FHS two years ago has been basically addressed but the company needs to fully avoid similar incident in the future. The company had installed a sewage pipe under the sea to discharge wastewater directly into the sea near Vung Ang Economic Zone in Ha Tinh province, causing a huge dead fish toll in Ha Tinh and several neighboring provinces like Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue.

He also tasked local authorities of Ha Tinh to continue strict supervision of the environment and coordinate with investors to settle emerging issues.

Formosa has poured more than US $11 billion to build the Son Duong port and integrated steel mill, making it the biggest foreign direct investment project in Vietnam and creating jobs for around 12,000 local people.
