Second microfinance management course opens

The managers of licensed microfinance institutions (MFIs), and those in the process of establishing, can build their skills through a tailor made management certificate course.

The certificate course, which is recognised by the Bank of the Lao PDR (BOL), will help professionalise the microfinance sector in Laos.

The Microfinance Association (MFA) in partnership with the Bank of the Lao PDR is providing the 20 day national Microfinance Management Certificate Course (MFMCC).

The training was officially opened yesterday at the MFA in Vientiane, chaired by Director General of the Financial Institution Supervision Department (FISD) at the Bank of the Lao PDR, Dr Akhom Praseuth and Chairwoman of the MFA, Ms Vanhsy Chindavong.

The unique course will strengthen the capacities of the leaders of licensed microfinance institute (MFIs) and will have a stabilising impact both on institutions and the financial sector in Laos.

Some 21 participants have joined the training from MFIs, FISD, BOL and MFA.

The course is composed of eight modules: basics of microfinance, business and strategic planning, human resource management and leadership, credit and delinquency management, MFI management and governance, financial and social performance management, product development and compliance and internal control.

At the end of the course the participants have to pass a test with a grade of at least 70 percent to comply with regulations and internal controls.

This year, MFA will organise five batches of the MFMCC training.
