Price of Da Lat orchids shoots up

Da Lat orchids and ornamental trees will cost more this Tet season.

Florists in the city have said the price of the favourite orchid has shot up to 30 to 50 per cent above last year's prices. This year they cost about VND1.3 to 1.5 million each.

Sources said the price increase has been driven by higher New Zealand seed costs.

During Tet demand for orchids quadruples, and the most expensive orchids have already sold out, said Doan Van Quynh, a representative from the Da Lat Flower Association.

Most gardens in Da Lat haven't received any of the expensive orchids for at least two weeks.

Ornamental seedless lemon trees have been a hit so far this year, Quynh said, adding that each fruit weighs 2 to 4kg. Some are as large as 6kg.

Bui Van Sang in Da Lat said each 2kg seedless lemon fruit tree costs VND300,000, which includes transportation to HCM City and Mekong Delta provinces.
