Kheavaly Company ready for corn seed supply

Kheavaly Agricultural Complex Import and Export Sole Co., Ltd is ready to supply improved corn seed (LVN10-NAFRI) to farmers in Laos after the company successful secured sufficient seed stock.

The company confirmed that the supply will start next month, the firm's president Ms Kheavaly Vongsouthi told Vientiane Times last week.

The target farmers for the company are in Ban Samsang (three builds villages) in Sangthong district of Vientiane as well as Xayaboury and Paklai districts in Xayaboury province, which are being targeted for development by the government.

The seed is produced by the National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute (NAFRI). It is good quality corn seed for supply to the company which will then in turn offer it to farmers for planting on their lands.

Many farmers have experience growing corn but they use traditional methods, which causes their corn production levels to be low and not conducive to commercial production.

This LVN10-NAFRI seed can be easily grown and also gains high yields, with 1kg of seed able to produce about 500kg of co rn cobs.

Kheavaly Agricultural Complex Import and Export Sole Co will be able to purchase the corn produced by farmers for a guaranteed price, which will then be processed at its factory in Khokpheung village, Sangthong district.

Hundre ds of farming families have decided to participate in the project, after the company worked in cooperation with local authorities to encourage farmers over a period of many months to convince them of the genuine benefits which will be available to them.

Kheavaly Agricultural Complex Import and Export Sole Co., has decided to promote farmers to grow corn as the company wants to create jobs and generate income for local farmers to achieve poverty reduction and better living conditions, Ms Kheavaly said.

The company aims to be part of the socio-economic development process and assist the government in its poverty reduction aims, she stressed.

In addition, Kheavaly Company will work in collaboration with NAFRI to provide technical staff to monitor progress and give farmers advice in growing and looking after their corn properly.

This project could not progress without the support of the Nayoby Bank, which is the government's official agricultural development and poverty reduction bank, Ms Kheavaly said.

However she stressed that this is not only about development initiatives in three builds villages.

Kheavaly Agricultural Complex Import and Export Sole Co can provide seed to and process corn from other farmers who wish to sell to the company as well.

Ms Kheavaly said interested parties should contact the company directly for more information and advice.
