Maybank pledges support for social-economic development

Maybank Lao Branch employees on September 27 participated in the Maybank Group Global Corporate Responsibility Day (CR Day) by embarking on their second phase of refurbishing Phonngern Primary School at Phonhong district, Vientiane province.

Maybank Lao's project was a continuation of their initiatives conducted last year. The event, led by General Manager of Maybank Lao Branch, Mr Lim Wai Hoong and involving 21 staff saw their initiative to refurbish the school building (interior and exterior).

With the theme Our Children Our Future, Maybank Lao geared up to create a more conducive learning environment for the children. Among the tasks performed was the replacement of the manual water pump to an automatic water pump and a new water tank. Maybank Lao also installed a new piping system and now the school can enjoy a continuous water supply from taps.

In addition, Maybank Lao also repaired the toilet doors (4 in all) and provided new tables and chairs, ceiling fans; put up the finishing touches of the new two classroom buildings i.e. cemented the exterior wall, painted the interior and exterior.

They were part of over 20,000 Maybank employees not only from Malaysia but also from the Group's offices abroad - including New York, London, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Brunei, China, Bahrain, Papua New Guinea and Singapore who came together to reaffirm their commitments to social development and welfare as well as environmental conservation through various community programmes.

With the theme “Inspiring Global Communities”, this year will see over 90 initiatives implemented throughout the Maybank Group, focusing on underprivileged children, the elderly and disabled as well as environmental programmes. Total man-hours expended for this programme are in excess of 100,000 hours.

General Manager, Maybank Lao, Mr Lim Wai Hoong said, “For us in Laos, one of the programmes that we have been working on has been with Phonngern Primary School. We have been involved in this cause since (2013) and have been excited to see the impact that it has created.”

“Maybankers in Laos have been deeply committed to volunteering their time and effort for this worthy cause, which is very much in line with the Maybank Group's mission of humanising financial services,” said Mr Lim Wai Hoong.

Some other exciting initiatives planned throughout the Maybank network include Maybank Islamic's “Cycle Save A Child's Heart” cycling event. Involving more than 1,000 participants, this charity cycling event aims to raise funds to support paediatric heart patients from across the Asean region who seek treatment at Institute Jantung Negara, Kuala Lumpur. Maybank Islamic will also be presenting a contribution of RM1 million to Institute Jantung Negara.

Meanwhile, in Kuala Lumpur one of the programmes includes a 3-day Maybank Charity Bazaar organised at Mid Valley Megamall to benefit People with Learning Disabilities. Undertaken by employees of Maybank's Group Human Capital, the event will also see the launch of ‘Maybank2u Pay' facility for GOL D Centre (GOLD = Generating Opportunities for Learning Disables).

This payment platform will enable users of Maybank2u to purchase items from GOLD's catalogue and will be beneficial for other NGOs which have products for sale as part of their efforts to be self-sufficient as it will help NGOs to manage their sales transactions systematically and effectively on their websites.

Elsewhere, in New York, Maybank's Group President and CEO Datuk Abdul Farid Alia s is leading employees there in their Habitat for Humanity initiative, while in the Philippines, Maybankers will be engaging with hearing impaired children at ‘My Children's House of Hope' in learning and se lf-expression through arts.

In Indonesia, employees are reinforcing Maybank's philosophy of embracing diversity and inclusiveness by a cleaning campaign at Places of Worship. Maybankers in Singapore, on the other hand, are embarking on a fundraising initiative themed “M-Powering MINDS” with their beneficiary, Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS) at Yio Chu Kang Stadium.

The Maybank Group Global CR Day, now in its fifth year, is part of the Group's “CahayaKasih” employee volunteerism programme where employees are encouraged to engage directly with the community in their respective locations, and help impact their lives 3 and/or environment through sustainable initiatives. The Global CR Day was first held in 2010 in conjunction with Maybank's 50th anniversary. Over 10,000 employees took part in that inaugural event.
