Vietnamese province, Japanese city ink cooperation deal
The southern Vietnamese province of Kien Giang and the Japanese city of Kobe reached a cooperation agreement on investment in multiple aspects in the island district of Phu Quoc on Wednesday.
The agreement was signed by Kien Giang deputy chairman Le Khac Nghi and Kobe deputy mayor Satoshi Toorii.
The two localities will cooperate on implementing projects in the fields of environment, water supply, waste water treatment, agriculture, and tourism, according to the agreement.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Vietnamese official appreciated the Kobe government’s cooperation and their interest in Kien Giang and particularly Phu Quoc Island, a district of the Vietnamese province.
The first project to mark the bilateral cooperation between Kobe and Kien Giang is the development of a water supply and drainage system and a waste water treatment plant for Phu Quoc.
“The two parties are completing procedures to initiate the project,” Nguyen Duc Hien, chairman of the Kien Giang Water Supply Co., said.
The project is scheduled to break ground in mid-2015 in Cua Can Commune.
“The US$40 million project will be funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency,” Hien said.
Takahiro Morishita, a chief official from the Kobe natural resources and environment department, also introduced the Japanese city’s policies to the Vietnamese officials at the ceremony.
Morishita expressed his hope that Kobe could help Phu Quoc sustainably develop in the future, with experience and technology from Japan.
