Korean company eyes high-end hospital in Vientiane

La-Ko Holding Company Limited, a private company based in the Republic of Korea, is interested in building a private hospital of an internat ional standard on the city's outskirts in Xaythany district, Vientiane.

If the feasibility study into the construction of the hospital proves positive, the company will invest over US$81 million (640 billion kip) to go ahead with the project. It will be slated for completion in 2017, the Vientiane Mai newspaper reported yesterday.

A memorandum of understanding for the construction project was signed at the Ministry of Planning and Investment in Vientiane last Friday by Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment, Dr Bounthavy Sisouphanthong and the company's Managing Director, Ms Hyun Sook Yoo.

At the signing ceremony, Ms Yoo also gave an interview to the newspaper, saying that the project was now in the process of completing the required documents before a feasibility study can get underway.

She said the proposed project will be the first modern hospital in the suburbs of Vientiane, allowing local people the chance to access the best standard of healthcare services that is available.

If the project progresses as planned, high quality services comparable with those available internationally should be available within three years, she noted.

Nowadays, a number of Vientiane people are fleeing Laos to seek healthcare services in neighbouring Thailand, at hospitals in Nong Khai, Udon Thani and other provinces.

Many people believe that with growing disposable incomes, they should have access to more modern healthcare services and providing those facilities here in Vientiane will help stop people spending their money in Thailand instead.

While many private and public hospitals in Laos are continuing to offer better healthcare services, more advanced medical equipment, experts and specialists are still needed in the healthcare sector.
