Online sales flourish in Vientiane

The purchase and sale of goods on social networking sites is now becoming a hot trend, popular among young people in Laos as advanced technologies become the most popular medium for just about everything.

Users of Facebook, currently the most trendy social networking site in Laos, can now buy and order clothes, shoes, watches and other goods via the site, posting messages to negotiate the price of products with salesmen or fellow users.

Ms Noi, the owner of a clothing shop in Vientiane, told Vientiane Times yesterday that she managed to sell her products on Facebook for a couple of months and also runs a shop as well.

“I think it is quite easy for buyers to order clothes through the internet as soon as they see the products on their computers or smart phone screens,” she said.

The owner of the shop will charge her customers another 10,000 kip for product shipment as payment for fuel.

“Selling products on the internet gives us the possibility to sell more clothes. Young ladies are my target customers. They also order different s of shirts, pants and shoes,” Ms Noi said.

She said that she runs a clothing shop and also sells shirts online; sometimes it helps her sell around five to six shirts per day.

“It is quite good feedback because sometimes I can't sell any clothing at the shop,” she explained.

Vientiane has a number of shopping malls, markets and gift shops, allowing buyers to seek proper outfits and other products but consumers now have the option of shopping online from the comfort of their own homes as well.

Currently, used cars, motorbikes, cosmetic items, clothes, job announcements, land and houses for rent and sale are available for internet users seeking to experience the newest trends and trade online with the touch of a button or the click of a mouse.

One Facebook user named Mr Sakhone, said he had previously purchased shirts through Facebook before. For him it was totally convenient and also saved time because the buyer only waited at home and arranged a sum of cash for payment.

“The most important thing for buyers is to carefully check the quality of products and ensure the outfits you bought are suited for you before making any payment,” he advised.

Despite the fact that online shopping provides an easy option for customers, they still need to be careful of being cheated when it comes to the use of credit and ATM cards.
