Laos offers exciting future for IPOs: DFDL Mekong

DFDL Mekong Legal and Tax Advisers' Laos Office (DFDL Mekong) held a seminar on the Lao Securities Exchange (LSX) in Vientiane yesterday.

The conference, which included various presentations, a tour of the LSX facilities and lunch, was held at the LSX building near Lao-ITECC and co-sponsored by Phu Bia Mining and the Australia-New Zealand Business Association.

Government officials, including Securities and Exchange Commission Office Director General Mrs Vathana Dalaloy, 60 participants from the European Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the ANZ Business Association and members of the business community attended the event.

Vice Chair and COO of the LSX Hoejong Park opened the seminar and presented background and current statistical information on the LSX. DFDL Mekong Country Managing Director Mr William Greenlee and DFDL Mekong Senior Tax Manager Jack Sheehan presented a thorough overview of Lao securities laws, Initial Public Offering (IPO) procedures and relevant tax information.

Discussion topics included IPO structures and legal, tax and accounting issues related to investing in Laos.

“There is an exciting future for IPOs in Laos,” said Mr Greenlee.

“This conference was the first of its kind and an ideal forum to educate and give perspective to international investors excited about the exchange and the promising companies that have listed, and will soon list.”

The tour of the LSX facilities included a visit to the modern eight-story building and an introduction to the two securities companies - Lanexang Securities and BCEL-KT Securities. If a person wants to invest in companies listed on the LSX, they must open a trading account with one of the two security companies.

Established in 1994, DFDL Mekong is an international law firm specialising in emerging markets in the Mekong region of Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Singapore.

With a team of more than 250 foreign and local lawyers, advisers and support staff working closely together within a network of nine offices in the region, DFDL Mekong provides personalised and cost-effective legal, tax and consulting services, according to the firm.
